Frequency Split and Frequency Insert
The Frequency Split and Frequency Insert functions are used on the Criteria tab to allow you to further divide segments in your campaign into additional segments.Â
Frequency Split allows you to automatically create child segments for a selected segment based on the values from a field in the database.Â
Frequency Insert allows you to insert new segments in your campaign by creating new independent/individual segments based on the values from a field in the database.

What is the Difference between a Frequency Split and a Frequency Insert?
Frequency splits are dependent upon their selected segment, whereas frequency inserts are independent of their selected segment. Performing a frequency split allows you to automatically create child segments for a selected segment based on the values from a field in the database.Â
It takes the first field and creates a child of the selected segment, then uses the second field to create additional child segments. On the other hand, a frequency insert creates new segments that are completely independent of the selected segment. The segment that is selected acts as a place mark, telling TouchPoint where to insert the new segments.

Example 8: Independent Frequency Insert segments
In this example, a search is made to isolate males in Colorado of varying incomes. Income Code is used as the frequency insert field and the selected segment is Males in CO. TouchPoint creates new independent segments using the values of Income Code.Â
These new segments are completely independent from the selected segment, and it is important to remember that any customer that meets the criteria of the first segment will not be available to be selected in any other segment because, by default, the segments are mutually exclusive.Â

When only one field is selected, the frequency insert will create single independent segments for each field value. When more than one field is selected, the frequency insert will create a filter segment for each of the values of the first field and then add child segments to the filter segment based on the values of the second field; or, create separate segments for each of the combinations. The frequency inserts behavior is based on whether you elect to create child segments for each unique field value.
Frequency Insert
A frequency insert works somewhat like a frequency split. It will divide segments in your campaign into additional segments. However, unlike a frequency split, frequency inserts create independent segments below where you created the frequency insert.
The Frequency Insert Window
The Frequency Insert window allows you to define a Frequency Insert. You must first select a parent or criteria segment for the Frequency Insert option to appear. The Frequency Insert window has these options:
- Add - Adds the highlighted field to the selected field pane.
- Delete - Deletes the highlighted field out of the selected field pane.
- Clear - Clears all the fields in the selected field's pane.
- Filter - Opens the Filter window, allowing you to limit the values of the fields you are splitting by.
- Create Child segments for Each Unique Field Value – Controls the creation of child segments when splitting by more than one field.
- Delete existing child segments - If the selected segment has children then this will enable TouchPoint to delete the child segments.
- Enter Values Manually - Enter the values you would like to be in the split.
To Add a Frequency Insert
- Highlight a segment in your selection criteria that you want to split into multiple segments based on field values.
- Select Criteria then go down to Frequency click Split from the menu or right-click the segment you wish to split and go down to Frequency and click Split.
- From the Available Fields list, drag and drop a field into the Selected Fields pane.
Adding a Filter to a Frequency Insert
Adding a filter to a frequency insert is the same as creating a filter anywhere else in MarketWide. When you do, a frequency insert you filter which field values appear in your criteria.Â
For example, you can generate a frequency insert on a State field. If you add a filter to only use Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, TouchPoint will generate 3 new segments instead of 50 when you do the frequency insert.
To Add a Filter to a Frequency Insert
- Open the Frequency Insert window as detailed above.
- Click on the Filter () button.
- The Filter window will open.
Creating Child segments
In the Frequency Insert dialog, there is an option to Create child cells for each unique field value. Child segments for unique field values only affect the results if you have more than one field for the frequency insert. By default, "Create child segments for each unique field value" is selected, but you can clear it by clicking the option box.
- Checked – For more than one field in the frequency insert, this option will create a new segment for each value of the first field, and then create child segments for each value of the second field.
- Unchecked – For more than one field in the frequency insert, this option will create separate new segments for each of the combinations of the values of the split fields.
Note
You select more than one field for the frequency insert to activate the Create child segments for each unique field value option.
Frequency Split
Why use a Frequency Split? Suppose you have one segment that selects male customers from Illinois and you want to further refine your campaign by breaking out this group by income level. Instead of building extra segments manually for each income level, TouchPoint Frequency Split option will build the segments for you automatically.
Performing a frequency split takes a parent segment and automatically creates child segments for each value in the field(s) you split. For example, suppose you want to make different offers based on gender and income. Instead of manually typing every income code with a gender, you could perform a frequency split by gender and income code. A frequency split automatically breaks one segment into two segments containing statements for each value of gender and income code.
The Frequency Split Window
The Frequency Split window allows you to define a frequency split. You must first select a parent or criteria segment for the Frequency Split option to appear. The Frequency Split window has these options:
- Add - Adds the highlighted field to the selected field pane.
- Delete - Deletes the highlighted field out of the selected field pane.
- Clear - Clears all the fields in the selected field's pane.
- Filter - Opens the Filter window, allowing you to limit the values of the fields you are splitting by.
- Create Child segments for Each Unique Field Value – Controls the creation of child segments when splitting by more than one field.

To Add a Frequency SplitÂ
Highlight a segment in your selection criteria that you want to split into multiple segments based on field values. Select Criteria then go down to Frequency and click Split from the menu or right-click the segment you wish to split and go down to Frequency and click Split. From the Available Fields list, drag and drop a field into the Selected Fields pane.
Repeat the previous step for every field to be included in the Frequency Split and Click OK.
Note
- The new segments created by a Frequency Split behave exactly like segments created manually. You can delete them, move them, copy and paste them, exactly as you would any other segment of your campaign.
- You can do a frequency split on any field but keep in mind that selecting a field for a frequency split with many values, such as Zip Code or Customer Number, will generate as many segments as there are values for the field.
Adding a Filter to a Frequency SplitÂ

You can place a filter on field values that appear in your criteria when you do a Frequency Split. For example, you can generate a Frequency Split on a State field. If you add a filter to only use Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico, TouchPoint will generate 3 child segments instead of 50 when you do the frequency split.Â
To Add a Filter to a Frequency Split
Open the Frequency Split window as detailed above. Click on the Filter () button. The Filter window will open.
Creating Child segmentsÂ
In the Frequency Split window, there is an option to Create child cells for each unique field value. This only affects the results if you have more than one field for the Frequency Split. By default, Create child cells for each unique field value is checked, but you do have the option to de-select the checkbox.

- Unchecked – For more than one field in the Frequency Split, this option will create separate child segments for each of the combinations of the values of the split fields.
